Embracing the Spirit of Mister Rogers

For decades, Mister Rogers inspired generations with his kindness, empathy, and community messages on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. His legacy lives on in childhood memories and real-life communities like Edgewood Village in Bismarck.

Recently, we received a touching story from a resident’s daughter about the profound impact our community has had on their lives. They even compared their experience to the warmth and kindness of Mister Rogers himself.

Nancy Woodmansee, daughter of Edgewood Village resident, Phyllis Flick, shared the profound impact of simple acts of kindness that have helped both her and her mom acclimate to their new neighborhood.

Here’s what Nancy wrote about her mom’s experience:

“It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, Fred Rodgers said at the beginning of each episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and in the summer of ’23, my mom was welcomed to this neighborhood of Edgewood with love, kindness, and respect. As she walked by many ‘streets,’ she was greeted by her name and asked how she was doing. Mom was amazed so many people knew her. What a welcoming feeling,” Nancy shared.

Since moving to Edgewood, Phyllis has enjoyed many activities, especially live music and BINGO. She also loves our meals, often saying, “Oh, the food is so good.”

Sometimes, all it takes is one kind word to nourish another person.

Offering Support When You Need It Most

“Kindness, compassion, and laughter have been a part of Mom’s journey as she progressed with her dementia,” Nancy said. She added that the compassionate staff helped guide her through this difficult time.

“They were in constant communication and support with hugs and kind words, and they provided direction as Mom transitioned to memory care. Mom is now in her new neighborhood of memory care, one filled with compassion, kindness, respect, laughter, and plenty of hugs,” Nancy said.

Everyone longs to be loved. The greatest thing we can do is help somebody know that they are loved and capable of loving.

Sharing Gratitude

Nancy expressed her deep appreciation for the experience she and her mom have had at Edgewood Village:

“It is with such a grateful heart that I express my gratitude towards Edgewood and all of its staff. Not only has it become Mom’s new home, but I have been welcomed into it along with her. It is truly a neighborhood where you feel like family.”

We sincerely thank Nancy and Phyllis for being part of our Edgewood community and sharing this thoughtful experience. Your kind and heartfelt words mean the world to us!

Imagine what our real neighbors would be like if each of us offered, as a matter of course, just one kind word to another person.
