It takes many hands, each working together, for a senior living community to operate like a well-oiled machine. To be efficient, we need many team members for activities, transportation, dining, maintenance, housekeeping, caregiving, clinical positions, sales and marketing, business, and leadership.
Compassionate and responsive staff create healthy environments where seniors can enjoy Edgewood’s experience. We never know who will apply or come to join our teams.
To say residents are in good hands with Roberto Rodriguez Ceballos is a major understatement. He has a unique backstory; he was a medical doctor while he resided outside of the US. His deeply rooted passion for providing care led him to a certified medical assistant (CMA) position at Edgewood Memory Care in Norfolk, and he was recently promoted to lead medication aide. We’re so thrilled he joined us!
Getting Started
Roberto began his medical training in the United States at Austin State Hospital as a psychiatric nursing assistant (PNA). From there, he joined Solidaridad Sin Fronteras (SSF) and earned a physician assistant certification.
Roberto explained, “I was fortunate to do my medical training in Cuba, where I graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Havana in 1988 in a hospital where family physicians are trained to do everything, including caring for the elderly, bedridden patients, and palliative care, treating mental health problems, performing procedures in the clinic, and treating chronic illnesses in adults.”
From 1988 to 89, Roberto was a surgeon in the Republic of Angola. In 1992, he graduated as a homeopathy specialist and worked at the 1st Public Health Ministry Rep Cuba. In 1994, he worked as an assistant professor of general surgery at the Teaching Institute of Medical Sciences in Havana (ISCMH). In 1999, Roberto worked as a specialist at the 2nd Grade Ministry of Public Health Rep Homeopathy Cuba.
Returning to Senior Care
“Before traveling to the United States, I worked primarily in a hospital emergency room in Ecuador, Chile, and Angola. I missed the privilege of building long-lasting relationships with my patients. For that reason, I made the decision to look for an opportunity to return to senior care. I chose Edgewood because I believe the quality of health care and preventive services it offers its residents is impressive. I am very happy to be a part of Edgewood in Norfolk.”
Regional Vice President Amy Brinley explained, ” While Roberto’s role in healthcare has changed, he brings such a great bedside manner to the residents in our community. He is also an amazing colleague who educates his coworkers on the importance of observing the little things and listening carefully to each resident’s needs. We’re honored to have him on our team!”
“People are not your most important asset. The right people are.”

Staying Balanced
Just like it takes a lot of hands to make senior living work, those who work with us must take advantage of opportunities to recharge, too! When Roberto is not at Edgewood, he stays active with his family.
“When I’m not working, I like to spend time with my family, wife, and children doing outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking. Together, we have enjoyed our explorations traveling to other countries. Also, I love cooking, dancing, and practicing yoga, three things that have always given me a sense of balance in my life.”
